PET SYMPTOMS
Tapeworms are one of the easiest parasitic worms to detect in cats and dogs. The tapeworm is a long, segmented worm which hooks itself into the inside of the intestine wall. When a pet passes a stool the parts of the worm sometimes breaks off, becoming visible in the stool sample. These pieces of worm will appear small and white, similar to a grain of rice. Visible worms within the stool is the first detection of a tapeworm infestation, the second detection is scooting. These tapeworms move toward the end of the rectum, squirming and wiggling through the opening of the anus. Dogs and cats will become very uncomfortable, scoot across the floor or ground to relieve the sensation.
Cats and dogs infect themselves with
tapeworm from consuming raw meats or drinking contaminated water. Fleas are also
a vector for transmitting tapeworms. The tapeworm nymph lives within the flea
until coming into contact with a mammal. Seresto for Dogs & Cats As the flea consumes his blood meal, the
pet bites at the flea ingesting the tapeworm nymph. Once the tapeworm has
entered the pet’s body he will mature, finding his was to the small intestine
where he will thrive and reproduce.
PET AILMENTS
A
higher infestation of tapeworms causes riskier symptoms to the pet. Tapeworms
live insidethe intestine, therefore consuming all food products placed there.
An infestationoftapewormswill result in a decrease of nutrients causing
weakness, weight loss, and hair luster.

RELATIVE INFO ON BREED MOST ASSOCIATED WITH THIS AILMENT
Tapeworms cannot survive without a host. They are host specific as there are two separate species to affect felines and canines. The feline tapeworm (Feline cestodes) is called Dipylidium caninum and Taenia taeniaeformis. The Canine Tapeworms (Canine cestodes) is called Dipylidium caninum and Taenia pisiformis. These worms have a long, ribbon shaped body with several segments that can become independent. The head is small and contains both hooks and sucker parts to aid in intestinal attachment.
